After World War II, a new jacket emerged in Japan with a unique cultural blend: the sukajan, or souvenir jacket. American soldiers stationed in Japan commissioned lightweight bomber-style jackets from local artisans, embroidered with iconic Japanese motifs. The result was a fusion of American military clothing tradition and Japanese embroidery art.

Fifty years later, in the 1990s and 2000s, as fashion drew inspiration from nostalgia and cultural cross-pollination, designers began to combine elements of the classic MA‑1 silhouette with the richly detailed embroidery of sukajan.

Designer Christian Audigier, inspired by Ed Hardy’s iconic tattoo art, embraced this fusion. According to Audigier, Ed Hardy is about visual storytelling and personal expression. He created his own interpretation of the sukajan, and this piece was born.

A true piece of fashion history brought to life by Christian Audigier.
